Performance Incubator

The mission of the HT@MTC Performance Incubator is to make living in the Midlands of South Carolina a viable career choice for professional performing artists.

Since its inception in 2012, the Performance Incubator has invited excellent, professional local performers to create new work that is suitable for touring to other theatres and non-traditional venues, ensuring ongoing work for the involved artists and the availability of premiere productions to audiences in the Midlands. The new pieces premiere on our stage, then the artists take the show on the road indefinitely. The performers are remunerated for their Harbison Theatre performance, and once touring, the performers retain all revenue.  The Performance Incubator reflects the college’s dedication to matching qualified workers with fulfilling careers. The Performance Incubator also facilitates masterclasses and other interaction between visiting Signature Series artists and professional performers based in the Midlands.  Past offerings have included masterclasses with The Second City, Pilobolus, JUNK, and Abraham.in.Motion.

Incubator alumni productions of Story SquadPlanet Hopping, Woven and Ruins continue to tour locally and throughout the Southeast.

Our 2017-2018 Performance Incubator is MIsery is Optional. This world-premiere theatrical piece travels the path from addiction to recovery based on interviews with people who have found freedom from alcoholism and addiction. Their inspiring, sometimes harrowing stories shine a light on a disease that affects 23 million Americans – and on the hope and travails of ongoing recovery.
