The Midlands orchestra honors passion and heartbreak with scores from favorite film and Broadway romances
Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College will kick off its annual Pops Series this Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 3:30 PM, when the South Carolina Philharmonic performs ballads of love and orchestral magic from film and broadway classics.
Romantic Refrains is a compilation of audience-favorite love stories, and the collection includes songs from Broadway musicals, Hollywood films, and more – highlighting some of the most unforgettable romances.
Conductor Morihiko Nakahara will lead the orchestra in the following songs:
- Bernstein/Mason: Selections from “West Side Story”
- Steiner/Campbell-Watson: Tara from “Gone with the Wind”
- Schwartz/Stephenson: You and the Night and the Music
- Ortolani & Oliviero/Hayman: More (Theme from “Mondo Cane”)
- Bacharach/Hermann: Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head
- Gershwin/Spialek: Selections from “Porgy and Bess”
- Webber/Custer: Selections from “The Phantom of the Opera”
- Mancini: Charade
- Morricone/Krogstad: Cinema Paradiso
- Jobim/Stephenson: The Girl from Ipanema
- Rodgers/Bennett: Selections from “The King and I”
- Leigh/Hermann: The Impossible Dream from “Man of La Mancha”
“The choice to focus on romance was one made intentionally,” jokes Harbison Theatre at MTC Executive Director Katie Fox. “With a news reel filled with election-season arguments and stress, this is a good moment to take a break, slow your breath, and get in the mood for love.”
Romantic Refrains is the first installment of three concerts in Harbison Theatre’s crowd-favorite Pops Series. The other Pops Series performances are the sold-out Holiday Pops on Dec. 11, 2016 and the nearly sold-out Daring Escapades on April 2, 2017.
Romantic Refrains is presented in part by Capital City Lake Murray Country. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit harbisontheatre.org/romanticrefrains.
